Meridian Channels & Anatomy Trains
Thai Massage originates from Thailand, a 2500 year old practice. It is a deep tissue targeted treatment to stretch and and open up the tissues. The some of the stretches are based on familiar yoga postures conducted for the receiver. It can be painful to reach the depths past the superficial muscles and feel the bodies stagnant and stuck parts. However the ultimate benefit is that the fabric of the tissue will blossom back to a structure that is not restricting movement, mobility or enjoyment of the human body. There are different styles of Thai massage based on geography, I have trained Northern and Southern Thai style, each with a unique flavor, south is more fiery and quick and north more slow and deep.
Intentionally strong to penetrate into the underlying tissues in the body. Allowing the barriers of dehydrated tissue to dissolve and renew. A sustained pressure is used with slow deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. This style of massage targets musculoskeletal issues such as strains and sports injuries.
An ancient Japanese healing method, Shiatsu translates to 'finger-pressure', it is deeply powerful and sometimes sharp method of opening up tissues that are no longer moving with fluidity or ease. There is also 'meridian stretching involved which works on detangling the compressed tissues and conversly the channels of energy (also biological transportation systems) that run along them. Shiatsu involves a depth of holding and presence for the tissues in the body which can allow the hypertonic muscles to release tension and soften back into the natural fabric of their design. It can be a very powerful method of release for physical or emotional suffering.
The acupressure technique is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine utilizing the flow of energy through meridian channels. There are certain points that tend to store more than others as they are at the end of a channel or are in an easily congested area, these will often very easily feel painful to touch, however they will also offer deep relief not just for physical pain but for the balancing of other energetic nuances of the body.
Calming the nervous system and releasing stress is becoming vital for the modern era. To maintain the lifestyles that we live it is essential to incorporate some soothing activities in to your days and weeks.
Relaxation techniques in massage can increase immune fuction, decrease cortisol production and leave you with an enhanced sense of wellbeing.
Remedial techniques are used in the massage to treat chronic pain conditions and imbalances. Generally mobilization techniques are used to support the integrity of the muscles and how they connect to one another. Remedial massage is based on anatomical configurations of muscles, tendons and ligaments and how to release muscles that are strained from excessive overuse within work or sport for example.
'Remedial massage aims to: find the problem; treat the problem; manage your symptoms'
- Health Direct
In Traditional Chinese medicine, there is a map of the body with 12 distinct Channels in which energy is directed from the organ along a pathway. There is prognosis based upon how well the movement of blood, qi and nutrients from the organs throughout the body by listening for the pulses on the wrists or hara as well as checking the tongue. It is also diagnosable often from talking with a client as to what organs are imbalanced as they govern specific emotions.
I mainly use the back shu points, along the bladder meridian channel to assess imbalance in the body. During the treatment and based on the emotional wellbeing of the client the picture becomes clear as to what is the main imbalance in the body. I do not claim to know everything, I have not studied TCM at a university, I have only studied during my Zen Thai Shiatsu therapist training and read books from certified acupuncturists such as John Kirkwood.
'Fascia is the biological fabric that holds us together, the connective tissue network' - Anatomy Trains
Fascia is the layer of tissue just underneath the skin that not only helps us be flexible but also provides stability for the body. Tom Myers is the founder of Anatomy trains, a bodywork practitioner of 4 decades. He describes the body as an interconnected web of fascia, never broken from birth to death. His work is masterful within explaining the body's tendency to maintain balance through injury, repetitive movement or lack of movement/mobility.
He has coined the term tensegrity to describe the anatomical and physiological relations in the body and not just human but horse and dog as well. The principle of tensegrity is that the impact of something will be distributed throughout the whole body, generally the greatest impact will be along the fascial trains that he has mapped out. For example, injury in the right rotator cuff could cause referred pain to the lower back because the hips will come a little further out of alignment to compensate for the pull between opposite scapular joined by the rhomboids and lower trap.
The philosophy of 'everything is connected and adversely everything is affected' is definitely a helpful lens to me as a bodyworker, because the view is expanded to look at how the body is relating to itself, how it is perhaps fighting to maintain itself in a balanced and composed state. It allows me to come into deep appreciation and reverence for the body and it's intrinsic mechanisms to help us.
